Sitting Bull

Father Peter John De Smet 1801 - 1873, 

A Jesuit priest, is said to have baptised Sitting Bull.

It is relatively common to read that Sitting Bull became a Christian in 1883, as the above dates indicated. Father Peter John De Smet died in 1873.  

In the 1915 book, The life of Father de Smet, Sitting Bull is referred to on a number of occasions without mention of a baptism.

There were at least four volumes of the priests letters published without one mention of Sitting Bull.
