"The FA Cup Final "

The Durham Light Infantry included a large number of men from Sunderland, important dates in the history of the hymn are easily remembered by the people of the City.

The football club, Sunderland AFC won the FA Cup in 1937 beating Preston North End 3 - 1 in the final.

In 1927 the organisers of the FA Cup found out that the favourite hymn of King George V was "Abide With Me."

The hymn was first placed in the Cup Final Song Sheet in 1927, the first and only time that the FA Cup has ever been outside of England, after Cardiff from Wales beat Arsenal 1 - 0.

Soon after 1927 The hymn became regarded as the anthem of the FA Cup Final and is sang ever year before the game kicks off at Wembley Stadium.
